Doing ab focused workouts once or twice a week is usually sufficient. The real problem with getting a six pack is body fat. You need to focus on buring the fat all over your body. The good news is that the more lean muscle you build the more efficiently you will be able to burn the fat. I have gotten great results from doing High Intensity Interval Training. The workouts are short and extremely challenging.
